Update: Southview Off-Leash Park Closure Beginning March 31
The Southview off-leash area (located on the west side of Deerfoot Trail between 34 Avenue S.E. and Peigan Trail SE) is situated on provincially owned land within the Deerfoot Trail corridor. The City by agreement under the Alberta Public Lands Act can use the lands for an off-leash dog area. However, as of 2024 the lands have temporarily reverted back to the Province for Deerfoot Trail construction purposes, anticipated to be ongoing until the end of 2027.
Why is the Park Closing?
The Province’s contractor has approval to take earth fill material from the site for use in areas of the Deerfoot Trail Improvements project. For the safety of the public and their pets during construction, the Southview off-leash area will close on March 31, 2025. Project signage will be on site to inform citizens of the area closure.
Construction Impacts
The Southview off-leash area will remain closed to public use until soil removal is complete. It is anticipated that the area will remain closed for the remaining duration of the project.
Alternative Off-Leash Areas
The City of Calgary is home to many great off-leash dog areas for pets and their owners to visit. The City’s Off-Leash Dog Areas map is a good resource to find alternative areas for dog owners to explore.
